Film Selections 06: Heat

The heat takes everything, and within its wilding holds the sense of true freedom, even if it is uncontrollable.

In the past year, we have learned about chances, journeys, and other whatnots. Bask in the excitement of getting things going for the other half of this year and go have some fun. It's summer! To enjoy the holiday is to watch something as sunny and warm as the films made in this season.

To begin your marathon, I have picked five essential masterpieces for you to enjoy!

A BIGGER SPLASH (Dir: Luca Guadagnino, 2015)

Starring: Tilda Swinton, Matthias Schoenaerts, Ralph Fiennes, Dakota Johnson

This sizzling erotic thriller takes the place in an Italian island. Imagine the heat of it all.

BEYOND THE LIGHTS (Dir: Gina Prince-Bythewood, 2014)

Starring: Minnie Driver, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Danny Glover, Nate Parker

In this tale that often feels too familiar, there’s a certain honesty that exudes from the film that's guaranteed to make you feel warm inside.

WHIP IT (Dir: Drew Barrymore, 2009)

Starring: Ellen Page, Kristen Wiig, Alia Shawkat, Marcia Gay Harden

Girls in a roller derby team. I remember watching this back in high school and falling in love immediately. Pure joy/exhaustion/gore.

GHOST WORLD (Dir: Terry Zwigoff, 2001)

Starring: Thora Birch, Scarlett Johansson, Steve Buscemi, Brad Renfro

One of those indie classics that you won’t miss growing up. Both an absolute delight and glorious discomfort rolled into one.

SHORT CUTS (Dir: Robert Altman, 1993)

Starring: Julianne Moore, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Lili Taylor, Robert Downey Jr.

This ensemble comedy drama revolves around a day in Los Angeles concerning some people and how they consistently present problems that we are thankful we don’t have.
